Introduction to Aardvark SKE's D&T SKE Course:

Welcome to Aardvark SKE's Design & Technology Subject Knowledge Enhancement (D&T SKE) course! Despite recent changes in funding, we, a consortium of experienced tutors formerly associated with Eureka, are dedicated to providing a comprehensive self-funded option to support aspiring teachers in Design & Technology.

In September 2017, the landscape of Design and Technology education underwent a significant transformation with the redesign of the D&T GCSE. Emphasising the iterative design process, contextual challenges, and integration of new technologies, the aim was to instil in students a critical understanding of D&T's impact on daily life and the wider world.

At Aardvark SKE, we believe in the power of high-quality D&T education as a driver of creativity, culture, wealth, and well-being, echoing the sentiments of the National Curriculum.

Our SKE course starts by examining the modernisation of the subject and the essential knowledge required for teaching D&T. In the introductory unit, we prepare you for teaching at both KS3 and GCSE levels, offering a general overview of key issues in D&T and the requirements of various curriculums and exam boards.

Moving forward, our course delves into the core areas of the GCSE curriculum and beyond, offering a comprehensive understanding of subject matter crucial for effective teaching.

What We Offer / Themes of Study:

We provide a range of D&T SKE courses, spanning from 8 to 28 weeks in duration. Depending on your needs and preferences, we may even offer a blended approach, incorporating practical workshops alongside online resources.

With the 2017 changes to GCSE courses, individual specialisms within D&T, such as Graphics, Product Design, Resistant Materials, and Textiles, have been integrated into the overarching Design & Technology GCSE. Rest assured, our SKE courses cover subject knowledge relevant to these specialisms, ensuring you're well-prepared for teacher training.

Our D&T SKE course is structured around key themes, including:

  • Health & safety
  • Materials & origins (Paper & timber, Metals, Polymers, Textile-based materials)
  • Energy and mechanical devices
  • New and emerging technologies
  • Material technology (smart materials)
  • Identifying and investigating design possibilities
  • Writing a brief & specification
  • The design process
  • Manufacturing a prototype
  • The evaluation process
  • Food Preparation & nutrition (While not strictly under the DT banner, we include this as it's often grouped with DT in educational settings)

Our course provides access to a range of online resources, supported by dedicated course tutors and one-to-one sessions. Trainees will explore the influence of new technologies on culture, emerging systems, production techniques, and the characteristics of different materials.

Bio: -

With over a decade of experience in education, I am thrilled to embark on a new chapter as part of the Aardvark SKE team, offering comprehensive Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses in Design & Technology.

Having begun my teaching journey 13 years ago, I initially qualified through the STTP on the Graduate Teacher Program. Since then, I've had the privilege of teaching across KS3, 4, and 5, nurturing students' creativity and problem-solving skills. Early in my career, I assumed the role of Subject Progress Head for Graphics and Product Design, a position I held with pride for several years.

Throughout my tenure, I've witnessed shifts within the field of Design and Technology, adapting to incorporate evolving qualifications into our faculty. Currently, my responsibilities include overseeing the Design and Technology GCSE, with a focus on specialisms such as Papers and Boards, Woods, and Textiles. Additionally, I manage Three-Dimensional Design at A level, approaching teaching through the lens of architecture, which has been both challenging and immensely rewarding.

Beyond the classroom, I'm deeply passionate about training the next generation of educators. As a visiting PGCE mentor for the University of Buckingham, I've had the privilege of guiding and assessing Design and Technology trainee teachers, witnessing firsthand the diverse approaches they bring to the classroom.

Outside of my professional pursuits, I am a proud mother of three young boys, who keep me wonderfully occupied. I am actively involved as a parent councillor at my eldest son's school and indulge my passion for interior design through project managing renovations. Exploring new places and enjoying holidays with loved ones are cherished pastimes that rejuvenate me.

Join me on this exciting journey with Aardvark SKE as we empower aspiring educators and shape the future of Design & Technology education.

Bio: -

As a graduate of the University of Leeds with a BA (Hons) in Textile Design, my passion for design has been the guiding force in my career journey. Transitioning from university to the realm of education, I embarked on my teaching path through Havering Teacher Training partnership in 2012, where I honed my skills and qualified as a design and technology teacher.

Over the past decade, I've had the privilege of sharing my love for design with students, experiencing the joy of teaching diverse aspects of the subject. From guiding students in hand embroidery techniques to demonstrating wood joint cutting and even delving into the culinary arts by baking cakes, every day brings new and exciting challenges.

For the past four years, I've assumed the role of subject progress head of food preparation and nutrition, overseeing the development of over 100 students annually. My commitment to student success is unwavering, driven by the belief that every individual deserves the opportunity to learn and explore new horizons.

Outside the classroom, I find solace in exploring new places with my little ones, embracing the wonders of discovery and adventure. And when I manage to steal a moment for myself, I indulge my creative spirit by experimenting with different designs on my trusty sewing machine.

Now, as part of the Aardvark SKE team, I'm excited to continue my journey of inspiring and empowering aspiring educators in the field of Design & Technology. Join me in embracing the thrill of learning and discovery as we embark on this enriching adventure together.
